Air-conditioning alone accounts for 10% of global electricity consumption – equivalent to 2.5 times the electricity use of Africa.

This is set to triple with the proliferation of cheap, inefficient and polluting cooling systems as the climate warms, economies grow and global population increases, especially in fast developing economies in Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Cooling as a service: a model transforming the market for cooling customers, technology manufacturers and investors.

CaaS offers a pay-per-service model with integrated financial tools to recapitalize technology providers who own the equipment and take on all future costs related to operations and maintenance, including water, electricity, and repair bills. CaaS can also encourage manufacturers of cooling technology to design for reuse rather than obsolescence, thus supporting circular economy.
Dan Hamza-Goodacre, Executive Director of K-CEP
“Cooling as a Service can help the much needed transformation of the cooling sector so that the cooling needs of consumers, businesses and governments can be met without blowing the world’s carbon budget”

Cooling as a Service Initiative: driving a paradigm shift in the cooling sector.

BASE and the Clean Cooling Collaborative launched the CaaS initiative to scale-up demand for efficient and clean cooling systems through the use and promotion of the innovative CaaS business model. The CaaS Initiative includes the creation of standardized CaaS tools, the demonstration of the model in flagship buildings that have energy-intense cooling systems, and the creation of an alliance to institutionalize the model.
