CaaS Presented as ‘Sustainable Cooling’ Solution at ASEAN Workshop

The workshop forms part of a new project by Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and International Energy Agency (IEA), with funding support from the ASEAN-Australia Development Cooperation Program Phase II (AADCP II). This project will deliver two roadmaps for the region: A Sustainable Buildings and Construction Roadmap for Southeast Asia; and A Sustainable Space Cooling Roadmap for Southeast Asia.

Cooling as a Service (CaaS) was discussed within the Breakout Session 1 panel discussion: presenting innovative business models and financing options for sustainable space cooling. Dimitris Karamitsos (Senior Energy Efficiency Business Developer from BASE) represented the CaaS initiative and together with other panelists, exchanged perspectives on how business model innovations are a strong catalyst for the deployment of more energy efficient, sustainable and clean cooling in the region.

CaaS underlines the importance of bringing forward business models which expose the whole life-cycle costs of equipment, which highly incentivises energy efficiency. Karamitsos further mentioned how servitisation can de-risk the implementation of more energy efficient, clean and sustainable solutions for the end-users.

The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the significance, benefits and progress of sustainable building and energy-efficient cooling in the region. With 220 attendees from around 50 countries from across the world, the sessions welcomed a range of stakeholders; including policy makers, building practitioners, academics, industry, and business and finance representatives.

“According to the participants’ feedback, the workshop helped advance their information on the possible policy measures and milestones to progress energy efficiency and conservation towards sustainable building and higher efficient cooling in the region,” said Septia Buntara Supendi, Manager of Sustainable Energy, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation at the ASEAN Centre for Energy.

To support the project and strengthen the understanding of the current status and trends in policy and technology, the IEA is collecting insights and data on the buildings and cooling sectors in the region. We invite you to fill in the “Buildings and Construction Roadmap” Survey – Please prioritize the sections you are the most familiar with.

* The 6 April Workshop for the joint ASEAN and IEA Roadmaps Towards Sustainable and Energy Efficient Buildings and Cooling in Southeast Asia project is the first of a number of stakeholder engagements, with more webinars being held from April through to July, with the next webinar – on improving compliance for sustainable space cooling products in Southeast Asia – taking place on Friday 30 April 2021.
